What Breeds of Ewes are OK ?
*******************************************

This registry allows the individual breeder to choose their own ewes
for participation in the Valais Blacknose Sheep Breed Up program
AS LONG AS THEY ARE A WOOL BREED,
no hair sheep.

That said,
the closer you are to having similar genetics to a Valais Blacknose Sheep,
the sooner your F1, F2, F3, etc will have the look we are all striving for.

BUT..... as we all continue to Breed Up,
it becomes very clear just how STRONG the Valais Blacknose traits are.
Even in many F1's....you can REALLY see the Valais influence.

There are certain registries and certain people who will tell you what you
REALLY MUST DO while choosing your ewes.

We don't believe in that tactic.
It is a BREED UP program and you may choose your own ewes.

There have been some very fabulous Valais Blacknose lambs
from MANY breeds of ewes.
Just perhaps consider not to go too small.
The Valais are VERY big sheep.

Please note  -- These will NEVER BE FULL BLOODED VALAIS BLACKNOSE
through a "breed up" program.
Any "breed up program" introduces foundation genetics which can and will carry forward.
We will only get CLOSER each generation,
but they can NEVER be 100% FULL BLOODED Valais Blacknose Sheep
using a breed up program.

Some states require certain genotypes of any
Black face sheep to get a health certificate.
Please check your state's rules.

But, IMHO, since the reason we cannot import these sheep
is in part because of Scrapie ( a horrible sheep disease)
which is NOT eradicated in the US,
decide if you want highly susceptible sheep in your program.
See GENOTYPE

According to a 12/14/18 USDA bulletin regarding Scrapie:

"A goat from a Pennsylvania herd was sampled at slaughter in July
and was confirmed positive for classical Scrapie in August 2018.
Genetically susceptible sheep and goats from the herd of origin
were depopulated in October and tested for Scrapie.
Five of these sheep and one of thee goats tested positive
for classical Scrapie."

Below is an example of Texas Animal Health Commission rules.
Check your state AND any state your sheep will have to pass through for delivery.
They CAN confiscate your sheep without proper health certificates.

"All blackface ovine females and all blackface crossbred females,
except hair sheep, imported for breeding purposes
shall originate from a Scrapie Certified Free Flock
or have documentation supporting that the animals are of the genotype
RR at codon 171 or AA at codon 136 and QR at codon 171. "

There are likely several places you can test your sheep's genotype,
but here is one I used. I think the genotype blood test was $11 for Codon 171.
You need this for interstate shipping.

We are happy to register and parent qualify
all qualified sheep in the Valais Blacknose Sheep Breed Up Program.

Jut FYI -
The Genetics of horns
Horn presence is controlled by three genes.
One gene (P) is dominant for the polled condition.
One gene (p) is sex-linked for non-polled.
The third gene (p') produces horses in both ewes and rams.
There is a 25 percent chance you'll get horned offspring from two polled parents
if each parent is heterozygous for horns (Pp).

At the same time, the male sex hormone plays an important role
in horn development, as rams usually have larger, more striking horns than ewes
and in breeds in which only the male is horned,
wethers will be hornless like ewes.
